Join us in praying this novena for son of our parish, Deacon Dan Niezer, for the next nine days. NOVENA FOR PRIESTLY ORDINATION Novena to begin Friday, May 24 God our Father, You appointed Jesus Christ High Priest of the New and Eternal Covenant. By grace You allow men to share in this Priesthood and in His saving work. We ask you to pour out Your Holy Spirit on our brother, Deacon Dan Niezer, and his classmates, Deacon Spenser St. Louis, and Deacon José Arroyo whom You have chosen for Priesthood. May they preach the Gospel worthily and wisely, celebrate the sacraments faithfully and reverently, and pray without ceasing. May they be united more closely every day to Christ the High Priest, who offered Himself for us to the Father as a pure sacrifice. Bless, sanctify, and consecrate the men whom you have chosen and called to the sacred order of Priesthood. Give all our Priests strength to carry out Your will every day. Through the Holy Spirit, make their lives worthy of the mysteries they celebrate. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Priest and Lord. Amen.

The Grand Creation I was recently on vacation visiting my sister in New Mexico when I was blessed to visit the Grand Canyon. This incredible masterpiece of God has marveled people for generations. The genius of God’s creation which took millions of years to form. As you walk along the edge, you follow a path leading back millions of years showing the layers of rock formed at 200 million, 500 million, and up to TWO BILLION years. In the last five million years the Colorado river has gradually formed a “giant hole in the ground,” as we told my four year old niece, that is now the Grand Canyon as we know it, attracting people from around the world. As we walked along the trail, I couldn’t help but count the different languages and nationalities. I heard French, Danish, Russian, English, and one of the Asian languages. We communicated with them without words but hand gestures and enjoyed the sight together. This amazed me that something that I take for granted in the US, people from around the world flock to see. We talk about “traveling abroad” when in our own land is such marvelous beauty! And yet...I wasn’t satisfied. I was amazed at God’s timing, how He patiently waited so long creating this world JUST FOR US! How much time and effort went into every masterpiece and how maybe, just maybe, He knows what He is doing in my life too and I should practice this same patience. But it wasn’t the beauty that attracted me and this bothered me. I have always been one to see God most fully in creation. To watch a simple snake move in wonder of its muscles and strength. To stare at a great mountain or waterfall in such wonder that I can barely wait to see the height of beauty unfolded in Heaven. So it bothered me...why was I not overcome by the Grand Canyon? It was pretty, sure, but I was enjoying my time more observing God’s people and wondering about the world than really looking out at this great landmark. As we left the park, this still bothered me. As I pulled out my phone I saw a text from Fr. Dave who often texts people in His prayer time to let them know He is praying for them. As I got into the van I saw this message on my phone, “You are before Jesus in Eucharistic Holy Hour. God Bless. And the splendor of Trisha (mankind) is far beyond the beauty of the earth.” It finally clicked. I traveled by plane and by car to see something that, while remarkable, pales in comparison to God’s greatest creation, you and I. We travel all around the world to see beauty, and yet God’s greatest creation is right beside us: our neighbors, our family, our co-workers. Even those who are hardest to love are far more amazing and beautiful than any wonder of the created world. In fact, God spent millions of years creating this beauty, JUST FOR US! It is not the pinnacle, it is the preparation. God started forming the world long before humans came, just so we would have somewhere to marvel and see God when we couldn’t see it in each other. But still, the Grand Canyon is only a masterpiece of God, a reflection of His beauty and creativity. Humankind is the only creation that is more than this. We are made not only in the image, but the likeness of God. When you look at another person, you are seeing God Himself that can never be repeated. We are the very thumbprint of God where every human is a line, a marking that truly comes from God, is like God, and only all of us together completes the image of who God really is. So while the Grand Canyon is great, humans themselves are greater. We can travel the world looking for God and for beauty, but until we see it in our neighbor, we will never truly find what we are looking for. There is nothing greater than God’s people who were truly given the face of God. - Trisha Trout

A Mother’s Heart Most people will tell you they knew their mom was mad at them when they used their middle name. My mom however, had a more creative tactic. I knew I had crossed the line when she told me, “I think you are just so stubborn, but your grandma says you are tenacious, and this will get you far in life.” This was usually a conversation ender and for good reason. Not only was it apparent to me just how frustrated my mom was, but she also was pointing out my most difficult trait and how God would someday use it for good. This is what a mother is. She cares and nurtures in the same way that a father provides and protects. Like many people, I don’t remember much of my childhood, but what I do remember comes from the stories my mom would tell me. Even when I was too stubborn to admit it, my mom always knew me best. She saw the gifts God had given me even at two years old. Even when middle school seemed to squish everything out of me, it was my mom who always encouraged me, told me I was a natural leader, told me her own “coming of age” stories, even when it annoyed me, because she saw something I couldn’t yet. This brings me to the other phrase my mom would often say to me, usually when she felt defeated and unable to help me. She would tell me that she is imperfect, but my Heavenly Mother is perfect, and Mary could help me in ways that she never could. For this reason, I was blessed with not only an amazing earthly mom, but an even better Heavenly Mom. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I want to encourage anyone who doesn’t yet see Mary as their mother, to ask her to be your mother too this weekend. For anyone who has lost their earthly mothers, you are not orphaned, because Mary is always with you. For those who have been disappointed in some way by your earthly mother, Mary will never abandon you, but brings all her children to her Son, Jesus. To all those filled with sorrow over the desire to be a mother but not yet graced with children, Mary will comfort you in your pain just as she comforted her Son on the cross. Mary also has a special insight into the life of Christ, because she was truly His mom! She changed the Son of God’s diapers, fed Him, watched Him grow and learn from St. Joseph, watched Him play, and saw the potential in Him that was sure to blossom and grow throughout His life. Even Jesus wasn’t born instantly ready to take up the cross and accomplish His mission on earth. He needed His mother to help prepare and teach Him. He needed His mother for all those scrapes and bruises that seem so minor, but to a child always need a Mother’s kiss. Mary is sure to have counted and felt the pain of each and every fall of Jesus, long before His crucifixion. Mary is more than just a Heavenly intercessor or a great saint. She IS our Mother and like my mom, she knows us better than we can even know ourselves. She knows our fears, and what keeps us from the Lord. She knows our desires, both earthly and Heavenly. She cares about both our body and soul, meaning she desires our happiness on earth, not just our eternal needs. She is ready to help, if only we have the courage and humility to ask. Like at the wedding at Cana, Mary is waiting to intercede as she told those with Jesus, “Do whatever He tells you.” Mary is waiting to work miracles in our lives as well, but like those in the Gospel we must also be ready to do whatever the Lord asks of us before He is able to work these miracles. Just as my mother led me to Mary, our even greater Heavenly Mother is always leading us to her Son, Jesus. And if none of this convinces you, listen to the words as Jesus spoke on the cross. When every breathe, and every word caused Him agony, Jesus felt it important enough to say, “Woman, behold your son,” and to the disciple, “behold, your mother.” John 19:26-27. If we are to be a disciple of Jesus, He is also telling us, “behold your mother.” This Mother’s Day we celebrate not only our earthly moms, but the greatest mom God could give to His people, His own mother, Mary. - Trisha Trout

Happy National Teddy Bear Day! St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is celebrating by bringing our special teddy bears to work and school! It has been a fun day for our students, teachers, and staff! Do you have a favorite teddy bear? Post a picture in the comments! The oldest bear here is 63 years old!
